KFF Health News, Editor (contract), January 2024 –  Current

  • Assign and edit enterprise stories for a national nonprofit newsroom focused on the intersection of health and policy. 

  • Prep stories for publication with partners including the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, CBS, CNN, and other outlets across the country. 

  • Manage team of freelancers to meet weekly California team publication goals, vetting pitches, and recruiting and training new reporters. 

 

The San Francisco Standard, Executive Editor, October 2021 – November 2023

  • Oversaw daily news coverage across all beats, including hard news and lifestyle, running up to 15 direct reports simultaneously.

  • Led investigations team on high-impact stories looking into police misconduct, political malfeasance, and the industrial nonprofit complex, resulting in new and proposed laws. 

  • Helped define the newsroom’s editorial mission and strategy and worked across departments to develop reporting tools enabling us to enhance coverage with public data.

  • Consistently employed metrics-based decision-making to help identify what resonated with readers and optimize coverage to reach various audience segments.

  • Served as acting editor-in-chief for six months during a tough transition period for the newsroom, earning accolades from the whole newsroom for my leadership.   

 

Boss Betty, Publisher & Editor, February 2019 – January 2022

  • Developed and founded Boss Betty, a digital news publication covering workplace gender equality, with a weekly newsletter list of 15K subscribers comprised of female professionals.

  • Commissioned and edited pieces ranging from deep dives like “How inclusive is the ‘We’ in WeWork?” to short features like “8 things to know about Accenture’s Julie Sweet” and data-driven initiatives including our tracking of IPO filings, many of which were featured and reprinted in established publications ranging from Fortune to Ms. Magazine.

  • Managed audience development using social media and partnerships and built and grew revenue streams including programmatic advertising, sponsorships, and subscriptions.

 

The Real Deal, Executive Editor, Growth & Strategy, October 2014 – February 2019

  • Responsible for the editorial expansion of the publication to South Florida, Los Angeles, and Chicago and the ongoing operations of those bureaus.

  • Developed, managed, and edited several quarterly and bi-annual print publications in new markets and oversaw the digital coverage of all non-NYC markets.

  • Developed the digital membership program, now the publication’s core revenue product.

  • Built and ran the editorial events department, creating new revenue opportunities in U.S. markets as well as in Canada and China, generating millions of dollars in sponsorship sales.

 

DNAinfo.com New York & Chicago, Associate Publisher, April 2012 – October 2014

  • Managed the relationships between editorial, sales, marketing, product development, and technology to ensure that all departments were in line with the company’s objectives.

  • Responsible for the expansion of the business to Chicago in 2012/2013 and continued expansion across New York City.

  • Analyzed and reported on metrics relevant to the performance of the business, including site traffic, audience engagement, sales campaigns, brand awareness, and lead generation.

 

Thirteen/WNET’s MetroFocus, Managing Editor, March 2011 - March 2012

  • Launched and managed a digital newsroom with a full-time editorial staff and more than a dozen freelancers covering local news and culture for the New York City PBS affiliate.

  • Built and grew an engaged audience using social media, SEO, SEM, and user-generated content campaigns.

  • Established relationships with more than two dozen local media outlets to distribute content, drive traffic, and build brand awareness.

 

DNAinfo.com New York, Founding News Editor, May 2009 - March 2011

  • Ran a newsroom of approximately 15 reporters filing multimedia stories on everything from politics and crime to dining in Manhattan.

  • Assigned, edited, and published stories to maximize site traffic while providing the most in-depth local coverage available.

  • Worked with senior staff on the development of the website and Content Management System.

 

Intelligence Squared U.S., Producer, July 2007 - July 2008

  • Managed all logistics involved in running this live policy debate series, held monthly in New York City and broadcast on both radio and television.

  • Put together policy research packets for debate participants and hosts.

  • Negotiated all vendor contracts and managed all production staff involved, from venue and catering to videographers and ticketing agencies.

 

Freelance Producer: Prior to my career in journalism, I worked as a freelance producer for media companies, booking talent, overseeing technical production, negotiating contracts, and managing budgets ranging from $10K to upwards of $5M.
